Stop motion is done through a clay/wire model so that the animator can move each part slightly to create movement on each frame. Replaceable heads are 3D Printed for better expressions.
In Kubo, they made the largest 3D Printed puppet and the first completely 3D Printed puppet. A few of the main animators are Travis Knight (also the director) and Daniel Alderson.
Daniel Alderson, one of the animators for Kubo, also worked on many other Laika movies such as Coraline and Boxtrolls, and also Fantastic Mr. Fox.
I'm really excited to watch Kubo because Laika is a really underrated company compared to Dreamworks or Disney, and they make really good movies and put a lot of effort into what they make. Animation in general is such a widespread medium, and it's improving as technology improves. Based on what I've seen online, Kubo is probably Laika's best movie, surpassing Paranorman, a personal favorite of mine from Laika.
